any of the numerous species of gallinaceous birds of the
family tetraonidae, and subfamily tetraoninae,
inhabiting europe, asia, and north america. they have plump
bodies, strong, well-feathered legs, and usually mottled
plumage. the group includes the ptarmigans lagopus,
having feathered feet.
