   called in allusion to st. peter's walking on the sea. see

   any one of numerous species of longwinged sea birds belonging
   to the family procellaridae. the small petrels, or mother
   carey's chickens, belong to oceanites, oceanodroma,
   procellaria, and several allied genera.
