fr. l. tortus twisted, crooked, contorted, p. p. of torquere,
tortum, to wind; cf. f. tortue tortoise, ll. tortuca,
tartuca, pr. tortesa crookedness, tortis crooked. so called
in allusion to its crooked feet. see torture.
