   whetting. as. hwettan; akin to d. wetten, g. wetzen, ohg.

   vigorous, brave, os. hwat, ohg. waz, was, sharp, icel. hvatr,
   bold, active, sw. hvass sharp, dan. hvas, goth. hwassaba
   sharply, and probably to skr. cud to impel, urge on.
